Dandelion Fluff Vacation!
It is because I love the vocation that I am called to, that it is so important to every few months get away on vacation. We try very hard to not have a schedule and to do something completely different than what we do when we are home and working. We call these kind of vacations "Dandelion Fluff" vacations. We go where the wind blows us.....

Does my heart yearn for the mountains or the beach? I think my heart yearns for the bluffs and the cornfields of Iowa....Sure I am not a fan of the snow and ice that covers the countryside November-ish to March-ish every year. But I have the instincts of a homing pigeon that knows when to head south....consequently one of my many goals for my life is to be a snowbird in the winter.....
But in the summer.....you just can't beat being in the midwest. Specifically Iowa. Iowa sweet corn can not be topped, pork and beef on the grill send the call to get your plate and take your place at the table. We spent a few days this summer packing up the gold and freezing it to enjoy later....
The midwest offers much when it comes to scenery and things to do. When we look we can find hidden treasures....Afew weeks ago we again found one!
When I was younger I remember going to Niagara Cave. A cave close to where I grew up. Just north of the Iowa border in SE Minnesota, near Harmony MN. I had fond memories of holding tight to the cool hand railings descending into the murky depths of a dark wonderland that held the promise of adventure and surprises. I thought that would be something that would be fun and enjoyable to share with Kolton (grandson/age 8), Kamryn (granddaughter, age 7) on one of the last days of summer.
So on one of the last Mondays before school started, I talked my sister with her kids and my mom to go with my grands, and I to go spelunking for the day....Yup, we would all go. And we were going to have a good time, even if it killed us.....
The think about memories is that sometimes, most of the time really, we forget distances, elevations, and other characteristics of gravity. Going down into the cave was not too bad. It was damp, It was chilly (a constant 47 degrees), and it was an adventure.
The first thing we were told was that Niagara Cave was discovered in the late 1800's by 3 pigs that fell into a sink hole. They had to be rescued by the farmer that owned them. since then the cave has been explored, cleaned out, mapped, electrified, and now is enjoyed by thousands of visitors each year.
The kids loved it. They saw the fossils, the layers of earth....aka God's amazing creations. They looked at stalagtights, staligmights, straw tights, and milky calcium deposits. There was a wedding chapel, a wishing well, and even a canyon. Yes, it was worth the price of admission. The kids were troopers, real explorers really.....Grandma and Great Grandma discovered the effects of gravity on muscles and bones. It was a great day and both of us slept very well that night!
